Separated only by goal difference in the middle of the Premier League table, inconsistent Newcastle United and struggling Tottenham Hotspur face off in Tuesday’s midweek clash at St James’ Park.

Thiaw went on to complete an unlikely brace, while early goals from Lewis Miley and Nick Woltemade put the game beyond Everton’s reach before halftime. This emphatic Merseyside win was the perfect response to Newcastle’s painful Champions League defeat to Marseille, and it marked their second consecutive league victory, moving them within striking distance of the top half.
Recent history gives Newcastle fans plenty of reasons for optimism ahead of Tuesday’s encounter. The Magpies have won each of their last six home games at St James’ Park, scoring at least twice in every match. Arsenal were the last team to leave Tyneside with all three points back in late September. Additionally, Newcastle are unbeaten in their last 10 midweek Premier League fixtures at home, further boosting their confidence.
In contrast, Tottenham’s struggles continued over the weekend with a 2-1 defeat to Fulham, as their run of poor home form persisted. Spurs conceded twice in the opening six minutes—Kenny Tete’s deflected shot and Harry Wilson’s superb curler—leaving them with a mountain to climb. Mohammed Kudus’ fierce volley in the second half was only a consolation. The loss marked Tottenham’s third consecutive defeat in all competitions and their third in four league matches, intensifying the discontent among the home supporters, who voiced their frustration at both goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and the team as a whole.
Saturday’s setback was also Tottenham’s 10th Premier League home defeat of 2025, equalling an unwanted record set in 1994 and 2003. While their away form has been more encouraging—collecting 13 points from a possible 18 on the road—history is not on their side against Newcastle. The reigning Europa League champions have lost six of their last seven meetings with the Magpies, including the last four in a row, and have not avoided defeat at St James’ Park since October 2021.
