Oliver Glasner has announced that he will leave Crystal Palace at the end of the season. The Austrian manager’s contract expires in June, and he has opted not to sign an extension. Glasner is reportedly among the candidates being considered by Manchester United, who are seeking a new long-term manager this summer after appointing Michael Carrick as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Glasner took charge at Palace in February 2024, joining from Eintracht Frankfurt as Roy Hodgson’s replacement. He guided the club to an FA Cup victory last season and has won 41 of his 95 matches at the helm. His name has emerged as a contender for the United job following the recent dismissal of Ruben Amorim. Notably, Glasner employs a 3-4-3 tactical system similar to Amorim’s, which could appeal to United as they look for a long-term successor.

The search for United’s next manager is being led by chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox. Alongside Glasner, other names under consideration include interim boss Michael Carrick, England manager Thomas Tuchel, and former Three Lions coach Gareth Southgate.

Crystal Palace, meanwhile, were knocked out of the FA Cup by non-league Macclesfield last weekend and currently sit 13th in the Premier League ahead of their trip to Sunderland on Saturday. The team is winless in their last nine matches across all competitions and is also set to lose captain Marc Guehi, who is close to completing a transfer to Manchester City in the January window.

Who is the favourite?

Currently, it is Brendan Rodgers who is priced as the initial favourite to take over the job in the summer with bookies William Hill pricing the former Liverpool manager at 5/1.

Rodgers has a solid CV which has seen him lead and one where he has picked up accolades at Swansea City, Celtic and Leicester City. He successfully guided the Swans to the Premier League in 2010/11 season via the play-offs before a stint at Liverpool saw him receive huge praise from Steven Gerrard describing the coach as one of the best in man management.

Over two stints at Celtic Park, he has won the Scottish Premiership four times, the Scottish Cup three times and the Scottish League Cup four times too.

While at Leicester City, he guided the Foxes to an FA Cup trophy and the Community Shield just a few months afterwards. He also guided the club back into Europe with successive Europa League seasons and missed out narrowly twice on Champions League football too.

He is, however, currently manager at Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah and is under contract until 2028 so may have to pay a large compensation fee to get his services.
