Manchester United have reportedly sacked Ruben Amorim from his position as manager. The Portuguese tactician has left Old Trafford following a challenging 14-month spell at the helm, with his tenure concluding after a 1-1 stalemate away at Leeds United on Sunday.
United presently occupy sixth spot in the Premier League table, having endured a dismal 15th-place finish last campaign and suffering heartbreak in the Europa League final.
According to reports, the choice to axe Amorim was taken by the club's hierarchy, including chief executive Omar Berada and director of football Jason Wilcox, after relationships deteriorated behind closed doors. Former United midfielder and current Under-18s boss Darren Fletcher will assume caretaker duties.
Fletcher is set to oversee Wednesday evening's trip to Burnley, with a long-term successor unlikely to be named until the summer.
Relations allegedly reached breaking point following the stalemate at Elland Road, when Amorim launched into a bizarre tirade, declaring he viewed himself as United's "manager" rather than merely the "head coach"
"It's going to be like this for 18 months or until the board decide to change," Amorim said. "That was my point, I want to finish with that. I'm not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy comes here to replace me."
Who is the favourite to become the next Man United Manager?
Bookmakers have swiftly responded to the managerial vacancy at Old Trafford, with former Scottish international Fletcher emerging as the favourite for the permanent role. BetVictor has placed him as the frontrunner at 6/4, with current Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, Enzo Maresca and Michael Carrick also in the running at 4/1.
The remainder of the season will be dominated by speculation over who will take the reins at Old Trafford, as the club seeks to restore its glory days on Sir Matt Busby Way. Glasner, who led Palace to FA Cup triumph last year and a maiden European campaign, could potentially weigh up his options.
Despite his success at Selhurst Park, there are question marks over his long-term future with the Eagles, and he has been previously linked with the United job. With his contract set to expire this summer, United could seize the opportunity to secure an accomplished manager in English football without a transfer fee.
