Jamie Carragher has dismissed Peter Schmeichel's bold claim that Chelsea could clinch the Premier League title with underperforming goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
The Blues have had a shaky start to the season, managing to secure victory in only two of their first six league matches. Goalkeeper Sanchez has been plagued by inconsistent performances and a series of glaring errors, including a costly dismissal against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Liverpool legend Carragher has consistently criticized the Spanish keeper and previously argued that he should have been replaced during the summer transfer window. Despite this, Chelsea chose to stand by him, although his form continues to falter.
While on CBS Sports, Carragher questioned Schmeichel about whether Sanchez could still become a league-winning goalkeeper, receiving an unexpected response.
Carragher queried: "Peter, you famously signed for Manchester United and were a big difference to them going on to win the Premier League. Do you think Chelsea can win the league with Robert Sanchez in goal?"
After a brief pause, the former Premier League champion responded: "Erm yes, and better defenders."
However, Carragher remained entirely sceptical, retorting: "No chance, Peter, no chance!"
Once presenter Kate Abdo had said goodbye to Schmeichel, former Manchester City defender Micah Richards then interrupted as he told Carragher: "You put him on the spot there, didn't you? He didn't say it with conviction, did he!"
Sanchez is anticipated to start in goal for Chelsea this weekend, having already served his suspension following his red card at Old Trafford. He was substituted by Filip Jorgensen in last month's Carabao Cup fixture with Lincoln City.
Sanchez has since made a complete return against his previous club Brighton - a game which Chelsea lost 3-1 - while he also succeeded in keeping a clean sheet against Benfica in the Champions League.
The Spanish goalkeeper was acquired from Brighton back in 2023. Since then, he's accumulated 69 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions and has prevented the opposition from scoring with 22 clean sheets.
Nevertheless, he hasn't quite succeeded in cementing his place as the number one choice. During his first season, he was competing with current Bournemouth star Djordje Petrovic for the role, and while he was afforded more opportunities last term, Sanchez found himself dropped for Jorgensen on multiple occasions.
Chelsea chose to part ways with several goalkeepers this summer. Petrovic moved to Premier League rivals Bournemouth, while Kepa Arrizabalaga was transferred to Arsenal. Chelsea is preparing for its game against Liverpool this weekend, amid a backdrop of goalkeeper issues for the Reds.
Liverpool's Brazilian shot-stopper, Alisson, sustained an injury during the team's Champions League defeat to Galatasaray, leaving it likely that Giorgi Mamardashvili will be called upon should Alisson not recover in time.
Meanwhile, Chelsea has loaned out promising young talent Mike Penders to sister side Strasbourg.
