The former Arsenal star suffered a heartbreaking injury in his first appearance for Ajax in front of the home fans on Saturday night
Oleksandr Zinchenko endured a nightmare debut for Ajax, picking up an injury just minutes into their clash with Fortuna Sittard at the Johan Cruyff Arena. The left-back was named in Fred Grim's starting XI for his first appearance, but he lasted only three minutes.
Following a clash with Sittard's Dimitrios Limnios, the Ukrainian appeared to suffer a left‑knee injury that left him in visible pain on the pitch. He received treatment before needing to be helped back to the dressing room.
"At the moment, it's not clear how serious Oleksandr Zinchenko's injury is," the Ajax boss said after the game.
"He will undergo an MRI scan tomorrow or the day after. Hopefully, we'll know more soon and it won’t be too serious."
Several Arsenal fans took to social media to react to the news, with one writing on X: "Wishing him a good recovery, Zinny," while another added: "Get well, Zinny. That’s how careers get derailed. Injury isn’t good for anyone."
A third commented: "This is painful to watch. I wish him a swift recovery," and a fourth remarked: "Zinchenko's luck is unreal."
The 29-year-old's setback comes just weeks after he accepted a significant pay cut to join Ajax from Arsenal, where he made 91 appearances across three seasons, in a bid to revive his career and force his way into Ukraine's World Cup squad.
