A new report has explained the one key factor which led to Xavi Simons changing his mind and deciding that Tottenham Hotspur would be the right move for him.
Tottenham’s acquisition of Simons has made their transfer window look a lot better, with the 22-year-old arguably being one of the most ambitious signings the Lilywhites have made over the last decade.
Simons got a brilliant reception at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ahead of the clash against Bournemouth, which showed just how excited Spurs fans are to see the Dutchman showcase his skills in a Lilywhite shirt.
Some pundits have suggested that the Simons signing is a gamble by Tottenham, but given the midfielder’s body of work at PSV Eindhoven and RB Leipzig, there is no doubt that he has a high ceiling.
Thomas Frank was key to Xavi Simons signing for Tottenham
According to reports, the threat of Chelsea hijacking Tottenham’s move for Simons was very real until very late in the piece, with the attacking midfielder even agreeing personal terms with the West London club.
However, in the end, it was the Lilywhites who managed to get a deal over the line, and journalist Graeme Bailey has now revealed that it was the player’s conversation with Frank that convinced him about a move to N17.
Bailey told TBR Football: “Like with a number of Spurs’ arrivals, Thomas Frank has played a big part in this. I am told Spurs appealed to him, but Frank had a chat with him. Following that, it was a no-brainer. Simons was hugely impressed!”
Spurs pushed the boat out to land Simons
While Frank may have played an important part in convincing the Dutchman about the project, Daniel Levy also did things he usually does not to secure the deal.
Firstly, the Lilywhites not only paid €60m (£52m) for the player but Tottenham also offered Leipzig a ‘significant sell-on clause’ on Xavi Simons, which is not something we often see the North Londoners do when signing players.
Additionally, Simons has been handed a seven-year deal worth £200,000 per week, which makes him the highest earner at the club, bringing the cost of the total package to a whopping £125m.
