Heimir Hallgrimsson's side were aiming to bounce back after their penalty shootout heartbreak by Czech Republic which ended their hopes of qualifying for a first World Cup since 2002.

Even with nothing on the line, a crowd of 39,000 attended in Dublin with Parrott adding the number of fans in attendance came as a real encouragement.

"It was always going to be a difficult game for us and our fans and to see so many of them cheering us on in a friendly on a Tuesday night, it really warms my heart," the striker said.

"We did our best. We came together as a team, as a country and with our fans. We have got a lot more to play for and we are going to come back again.

"That connection we have built I think has been missing for a few years so to get it back and see people so happy and, for me personally, to see so many kids with my name on signs and calling my name is a dream."
