Patrick Vieira backs Arsenal star to make difference in Premier League title race

Former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira won three Premier League titles with the Gunners and knows what it takes to get over the line

Patrick Vieira is backing Viktor Gyokeres to make a big impact for Arsenal in the final stretch of the season.

The former Gunners skipper is a big admirer of the Swede, who has scored 18 goals in all competitions, and he feels the marquee summer arrival has what it takes to fire Mikel Arteta's men over the line.

Vieira told Arsenal's website: "I've seen him working hard out of possession, and he's always working hard for the team. I've seen him making the run to create that space, and for some reason, the ball didn't get there yet.

"But I think he's somebody who has more to give than what we've seen, and I like his energy, and I like his spirit when he's on the field. He's a real team player and scoring goals, he will score goals, I don't have any doubt about that."

Gyokeres was named on the bench for Arsenal's 2-1 defeat at Manchester City last weekend.

However, he remains the team's top goalscorer this term and will be itching to reach the 20-goal tally by the end of May as Arsenal eye a historic Double.

Vieira does not see any reason to panic and is of the opinion that Arsenal have already proven their worth having also reached the Champions League semi-finals.

He continued: "I think I just want them to remind themselves where they are and why they are where they are. Meaning that they are at the top of the league, they are in the semi-final of the Champions League, and you can't reach that level with no quality, with no team spirit and with no togetherness.

"It's about winning games, they know how to do it because they've been doing it for the last seven, eight months. When we are in the last sprint, I will say it, it's important not to forget the quality that brings them where they are today because that will help them to win.

"I think when you're going through this run, it's important not to change the habit. You just keep doing what you used to do and try to enjoy the family time."

Vieira lifted the Premier League title in 1998, 2002 and 2004 under Arsene Wenger and is currently out of work having left his managerial role with Genoa last November.
