Alexis Mac Allister has been tipped to bounce back to his best form this season, with suggestions that Liverpool's influx of new signings may have "fried his head."
Mac Allister has found it challenging to regain full match fitness after an injury disrupted his pre-season preparations. The Argentine international hasn't played a full 90 minutes for Liverpool since April and has only started six out of 11 games in all competitions this season.
Ex-Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes – who's known to be a fan of the Reds star – believes that the arrival of several new faces, including $157 million attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz and striking pair $169M Alexander Isak and $106M Hugo Ekitike, hasn't made things any easier for Mac Allister.
"I thought Alexis Mac Allister was brilliant last season, he controlled lots of games," said Scholes. "He's been in and out (this season) and signing players has probably fried his head a bit, he's not sure what's what.
"We're seven games into a Premier League season – these players are so good, and it'll soon work itself out."
Wirtz is still finding his feet after joining from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, and Scholes sees similarities to when Juan Sebastian Veron joined Manchester United back in 2001.
On the latest episode of The Overlap Fan Debate in association with Sky Bet, Scholes commented: "Florian Wirtz is a little different than Veron. He's more of a number 10, whereas Veron was more of a central midfield player.
"He just couldn't settle into the team, and it disrupted the way the team played. He was more of a free spirit, and he didn't play the position that well.
"I think it's the same with Wirtz – because the midfield players aren't quite functioning and in-form, like Ryan Gravenberch who was brilliant last season.
"When you play that number 10 position, you have to be certain what's behind you just to be a little more relaxed.
"There's clear talent there with Wirtz, I love watching him receive the ball, but he's not quite ready. You could say that about seven or eight of the Liverpool team."
