Pedro Porro opens up on his Tottenham future and his defensive improvements under Thomas Frank

Pedro Porro has spoken about the improvements he has made defensively and whether his Tottenham role has evolved since Thomas Frank arrived through the door.

Porro has been one of Tottenham’s most consistent performers over recent years, and unlike the majority of the Spurs squad, he rarely gets injured.

The Spurs full-back was maligned for his defending when he first arrived at N17, but that is an area in which he has shown significant improvement.

Porro has even bit back at his critics on a few occasions, and the 26-year-old appears to be playing with more confidence for both club and country.

Pedro Porro admits he feels at home at Tottenham

The full-back is now one of the more experienced players in the Spurs squad, and he has confessed that he now feels very settled at the North London club.

Porro shed light on how his approach to defending and going forward has evolved over the last few years, and what he focuses on while engaging in either discipline.

Speaking to Tottenham’s matchday programme [23:10, 5/11/2025], the Spain international said: “The truth is, I’m very happy and very settled at Tottenham. I try to give 100 per cent every day. Whether I’m defending, attacking or on the side, I always try to give my 100 per cent. I think that’s also important for me in the case of Thomas, that I’m always available, that’s the best thing for me.

“Nowadays, you have to be important in both roles. Several years ago, I was trying to be more involved defensively and see what I could do because then, in attack, I have that self-confidence that’s also required of a full-back when they reach the deep areas. In defence, you have to be consistent, and in attack, you also have that support for your teammates when they need it.

Porro reveals if his Spurs role has changed under Thomas Frank

Under Ange Postecoglou, the former Sporting Lisbon man often occupied half-spaces in midfield, given the Australian’s preference for inverted full-backs.

He has been more of a traditional right-back since Frank arrived through the door at Tottenham, but interestingly, Porro insisted that the Dane has given him the freedom to play his natural game instead of telling him to focus more on his defending.

The 26-year-old added: “The arrival of Thomas is good. I have freedom because he also has not told me to defend more than attack, just play my football. The truth is that he’s a coach with a very good mentality and defensive structure.

“From my point of view, we noticed [the difference in defensive shape] quite a bit. I think, for Thomas, every detail is important to him and the players like that too. He is close to the players; he likes to ask how we are doing on a daily basis. think that the coach is very good in that regard, and I think that helps us a lot.”
