Pep Guardiola identifies Phil Foden change that has led to Man City form

Phil Foden turned in another encouraging performance for Manchester City as they beat Everton 2-0 in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola has backed Phil Foden to age like a fine wine after he praised the increasing maturity of the Manchester City playmaker.

The 25-year-old has looked back to his best this season. After the Blues struggled in the first half against Everton at the Etihad, Foden took control of proceedings after the break.

He provided the pass that split open the game, sending Nico O'Reilly in down the left flank. His fellow academy graduate crossed for Erling Haaland to open the scoring.

Foden ran the show after that, and Guardiola is delighted with his improvements this season, both on and off the pitch.

"[He's] more mature and everything," the City boss said. "He's fine, he's smiling, and his body language in training sessions is fantastic. He always creates something.

"The first half was more difficult because we didn't read who was the free man but the rest was really good. Phil had made a step and played like he is. I would say, except last season, but everyone was not at their best. Phil every season has been extraordinary.

"I said many times it was a question of time. You cannot play all the time in sixth gear, you have to move the tempo. It was a question of time that he realised and not every time can be explosive actions. You have to walk, make a pass and then in one moment make the brilliance. Step by step, Phil will be better, like a good wine."

Foden is on a mission to force his way back into the England squad before the World Cup. He was overlooked for Thomas Tuchel's latest squad, and Guardiola wants him to continue thriving as close to the opposition penalty area as possible.

"He can be deeper. I admire managers of all generations who use common sense more than now," he said.

"We rely a lot on data and this kind of stuff but common sense he is a talented player with goals and assists so put him close to the box. Phil in normal situations, has to play in the decisive part of the game."
