Pep Guardiola was booked in the second half of the FA Cup fifth round clash with Newcastle United

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was involved in a fiery confrontation with the fourth official during the Blues' FA Cup tie with Newcastle United.

City, leading 2-1 at the time, felt they should have had a free kick for a foul by Kieran Trippier on Jeremy Doku. Referee Sam Barrott remained unmoved and the decision angered Guardiola who made his feelings clear on the touchline.

The City chief followed Kolo Toure into the referee's notebook after raging at the decision. Doku had spun his defender and looked to be held back momentarily before losing possession.

Guardiola immediately ran to fourth official Lewis Smith, shouting in his face, and was then told to remain in his dugout so Barrott could book him. He then continued to berate the fourth official and at one point clenched his fists.

Barrott was the referee that left Guardiola fuming at St James' Park earlier in the season. He did not give Phil Foden a penalty when Fabian Schar crunched him in the box, nor Doku when his shot hit Malick Thiaw's hand.

Those decisions were supported by the VAR team, who then deemed that the Newcastle winner was onside; in January in the Carabao Cup, Antoine Semenyo had a goal ruled out by the VAR officials after a six-minute delay that caused Guardiola to air all of his grievances.

Barrott has only taken charge of one City game since - the Carabao Cup win over Brentford in December - but Guardiola had already clocked that he would be seeing the ref again on Saturday when he spoke to reporters on Friday. "We have the same one. Thank you so much. It’s good," he said.
