Jurgen Klopp once dubbed Gabriel Martinelli as the "talent of the century" and the Arsenal star demonstrated why the former Liverpool manager is a big fan with his performance against Manchester City.

Martinelli scored a last-gasp equaliser against Pep Guardiola's side after Erling Haaland's ninth-minute opener looked to be the winner for the away side. City appeared to be on course for another significant victory over Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, having led for the majority of the match at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite Arsenal dominating possession and creating more chances and corners, it seemed their efforts would ultimately prove fruitless. However, the game took a dramatic turn when Martinelli was introduced in the 80th minute.

The winger lofted the ball over goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the final moments of the match, leaving Guardiola with egg on his face over his defensive substitutions in the last quarter of an hour. Klopp had previously highlighted Martinelli's exceptional talent after a thrilling 5-5 draw between Liverpool and Arsenal in the League Cup in 2019, which Liverpool eventually won on penalties.

Speaking about the then-18-year-old, the German said: "Martinelli's pretty much the same age (as my young team) but he's a talent of the century, he's an incredible striker, so it's really difficult.

"He's really unbelievable. So young, looks so mature already, is a proper threat. Yeah, he looks like a really decent player. I didn't want to put any backpack [pressure] on his back with this thing but I just really like good football players and obviously he's a very good one."

Since that time, the Brazilian winger has scored 53 goals and provided 30 assists across 230 outings for the Gunners, claiming an FA Cup and Community Shield along the way. On the international stage, the attacker boasts an Olympic gold medal with Brazil, which was won in 2021 when he was merely 19 years old.

Martinelli has slipped down the hierarchy somewhat at the Emirates Stadium recently, with the likes of Ethan Nwaneri, Leandro Trossard and Noni Madueke being preferred on the flanks ahead of him.

However, the substitute's clever finish past Donnarumma earned the Gunners the point, maintaining their involvement in the early championship race with Liverpool this campaign.

Manager Arteta heaped praise upon the 24-year-old, as he pointed out the young winger's "energy and attitude" despite coming on late in the game. He said: "We had very good momentum and we needed to time that well.

"He's in a really good moment again after the game he had in Bilbao and that period of time probably he deserved more, but his energy again, his attitude was really good and that's why he made the impact that he made again for the team."

Meanwhile, Guardiola will be ruing the chance to get another one over his former student Arteta. City sit ninth in the Premier League table after missing out on the chance to jump to joint-fifth with the Gunners and Crystal Palace.

Guardiola's attention now turns to a Carabao Cup third round encounter away to League One outfit Huddersfield on Wednesday, followed by a Premier League clash at home to Burnley. City will be looking to secure a position in the top part of the league table ahead of October's international break.
