Pep Guardiola has become the fastest manager to 250 wins in the Premier League after Manchester City beat Brentford.
Pep Guardiola will invite Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger to dinner in Manchester after the Catalan became the fastest manager to 250 wins in Premier League history.
The City boss has achieved the landmark in 349 games, which is 55 faster than Ferguson managed, while Wenger brought up the milestone in 423 matches.
It required a dogged defensive effort in the second half to secure City the win at Brentford, with Erling Haaland scoring early on but the Blues not making the most of their first-half dominance.
Brentford came back into it after the break, but City stood firm to hand Guardiola a record that he takes a great deal of pride in.
“We won a lot! Otherwise you cannot take this accolade. It’s an honour for me to be alongside Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger so I will invite them to a good dinner," he said.
“Maybe not in Manchester, maybe somewhere with more sun. No, we’ll do it in Manchester. It’s an honour, a pleasure to be part of that in the Premier League history.
“I want to say thank you to the club, the organisation, the players and the staff that I had because we did it quicker, faster, better and really, really pleased. Now, let’s go for 250 more."
City showed mettle to cling on to the win, having thrown away a lead at Monaco in midweek and surrendered a 2-0 lead to draw here back in January, and they were put under plenty of pressure in the second half.
"Away win 1-0 always you suffer, proud of the first half, we were at our best for many months, [but] we have to score more goals," said Guardiola..
"We knew half time they would push more, the Premier League is like that, long balls and throw-ins were much more. Corners, free-kicks we suffer. The game was well played, Gigi [Donnarumma] saves when Josko (Gvardiol) loses a duel. Maybe we don’t create a lot but we almost created a lot of clear chances.
"Really pleased this month since the United game. We are there, I have the feeling game by game we are better and better."
