Referee Peter Bankes has tried to justify his decision to disallow Randal Kolo Muani’s second goal for Tottenham in the North London derby, but there is a problem with his reasoning.
Tottenham Hotspur can hardly claim they deserved anything other than a defeat against Arsenal in the North London derby, considering the team’s poor overall performance.
However, Spurs were denied a goal which would have made the score 2-2 during the second goal of the game, due to what was deemed to be a foul in the build-up.
Randal Kolo Muani used both his hands on Gabriel’s back, which saw the Arsenal defender hit the deck and as a result, the equaliser was disallowed.
The referee who disallowed the goal has since attempted to back up his decision, but his words will only frustrate the Spurs supporters who felt their team were hard done by last Sunday.

Peter Bankes stands by his decision to disallow Randal Kolo Munai’s goal
Disallowing Muani’s goal was a controversial decision which caused quite the uproar, but Bankes does not see it this way.
According to the matchday official, he is ‘comfortable’ with his call because Muani’s use of both hands means he pushed Gabriel, which means an offence was committed.
Bankes told Match Officials Mic’d Up: “I see two hands from the Tottenham player into the back of the Arsenal player and that is going to be my main focus.
“Once you see two hands in live play, it looks like a push, a clear push.”
Premier League referees are not consistent enough
One of the biggest problems Spurs fans had with Muani’s disallowed goal is that it is one rule for them and another for teams like Arsenal.
The most notable incident demonstrating this is when Cristian Romero experienced a two-handed shove by Hugo Ekitike during Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool last December. Despite this seemingly identical incident, the Reds were awarded a goal.
Supporters of other clubs have also taken to social media to share more clips of similar incidents. One of which was a game refereed by Bankes, which saw him fail to award Aston Villa a penalty after their striker suffered a two-handed shove by a Brighton defender.
Ultimately, this reveals a serious problem with the lack of consistency in the decision-making of referees in the Premier League.
