In an update regarding the incident, GMP has released a statement saying that the outbreak occurred after officers stepped in to prevent an escalation between rival fans 'goading one another'. Three people were arrested, say officers.

A GMP spokesperson said: "The vast majority of supporters attending the fixture witnessed an exciting top‑of‑the‑table clash and made their way home safely following the match.

"Unfortunately, a small number of individuals were involved in isolated pockets of disorder on Ashton New Road after the game, where rival fans were goading one another.

"Officers intervened to prevent the situation escalating and three arrests were made.

"Anti‑social, hateful and disorderly behaviour has no place in football or within our communities.

"Greater Manchester Police continues to work closely with partners to identify and address the actions of the small minority who do not behave responsibly, including seeking Football Banning Orders where necessary."
