Tottenham Hotspur are just one day away from getting their new Premier League campaign underway and they will be looking to bounce back after a devastating defeat in the UEFA Super Cup.
Tottenham Hotspur have already begun their season and there is plenty to be positive about. A spirited display on Wednesday night left Spurs just minutes away from lifting the UEFA Super Cup. However, PSG fought back and secured the victory, highlighting a lack of depth in the Tottenham first-team squad.
Pre-season has been a mixed bag for Thomas Frank’s men. The 1-0 North London derby victory over Arsenal was a notable highlight, but a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich, as well as draws against Wycombe Wanderers and Luton Town, left much to be desired.
On top of this, Tottenham’s lack of urgency in the transfer window has been a cause of frustration amongst the fanbase. Mohammed Kudus is already looking like quite the signing, but he is the only player Spurs have really spent big on.
With both the positives and negatives taken into consideration, here is a prediction of how Tottenham will fare in their opening five Premier League matches:
Tottenham should have no problems against Burnley
Spurs open their league campaign against newcomers Burnley and Scott Parker did a tremendous job at Turf Moor last season. His team smashed defensive records in the Championship and quite comfortably achieved promotion in the end.
The Clarets have not hesitated to strengthen ahead of the new season, signing Armando Broja and Lesley Ugochukwu from Chelsea. They have also bagged former Lilywhite Marcus Edwards and brought Kyle Walker in on loan.
However, making the step up to the Premier League is often a task too tough for many Championship clubs. After the level Tottenham played at against PSG, a home clash against Burnley should not be causing any issues.
Tottenham to win 3-0
Spurs may taste defeat for the second time under Thomas Frank against Manchester City
Tottenham twice got the better of Manchester City last season, but it was Pep Guardiola’s side who came out on top last time out, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Cityzens were underwhelming on the whole, finishing third in the Premier League table, but they still registered 33 points more than Spurs. Despite bidding farewell to a club legend in Kevin De Bruyne, new players have been brought in, meaning their squad looks stronger than it did before the transfer window opened.
Tottenham did stun Man City with a 4-0 victory at the Etihad last season, but Frank is still figuring out how he wants to set his team up. His team certainly have a chance, but could fall just short on August 23.
Man City to win 2-1
Tottenham will have to work hard against Bournemouth
Tottenham have not beaten Bournemouth since December 2023 and that is not solely down to themselves. The Cherries had a strong Premier League campaign, but fell away towards the end of the season, resulting in a ninth place finish.
A second half comeback was required last time the two sides met, as Spurs rescued a 2-2 draw thanks to a Heung-min Son penalty.
This time around, Tottenham ought to be sealing the victory. Frank had a pretty good home record at Brentford and hopefully he can get results at his new place of business.
Tottenham to win 3-1
Mohammed Kudus could haunt his former club
Spurs hammered West Ham United 4-1 last season and while the away fixture ended in a 1-1 draw, Ange Postecoglou was prioritising the Europa League by that point.
Tottenham’s London rivals have made five signings this summer, three of whom are defensive players. However Spurs have already showcased their ability to score goals under Frank, even when they have very few attacking minded players on the pitch. It was Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven who broke down the PSG defence, so there are goal threats all over the pitch.
Then there is Kudus, a player who will be motivated to show up against West Ham. The London Stadium will give him a cold reception, but he looks like the kind of player who will not be fazed by a hostile atmosphere. It would be superb if he were to bag his first competitive goal for Tottenham against his former employers.
Tottenham to win 3-2
Victory may be a step too far for Tottenham against Brighton
Spurs will play a second consecutive away game when they travel to the south coast on September 20.
Brighton are their opponents that day and despite narrowly missing out on European football, the Seagulls are a very good team. They subjected Spurs to a 4-1 battering on the final day of the most recent Premier League season, days after that night in Bilbao.
There is a difference, however, between playing a throwaway dead rubber and a game that actually matters. Frank will adapt to give Tottenham the best possible chance of getting a result on the road and his team may just do enough to pick up a point from a difficult fixture.
Tottenham to draw 1-1 with Brighton
Every Spurs supporter will be backing Frank to exceed expectations and get off to an electric start, but he must take it one day at a time. For now, the priority is welcoming Burnley to the Premier League with a beating they will not forget anytime soon.
