Premier League cult hero's son trains with Alexander Isak and Liverpool first team

The son of Wigan Athletic legend Maynor Figueroa trained alongside Alexander Isak during the Swede's first training session with Liverpool earlier this week.

Figueroa, who played 200 times for Wigan and was part of the 2013 FA Cup-winning team, became a father just a couple of years before his transfer to Fulham in 2008.

And the two-year-old who moved to the North West of England from Honduras in 2006 is now a 19-year-old striker who plays in Liverpool's academy.

Keyrol Figueroa actually joined Liverpool in 2018, and has since played for the Reds at various youth levels, as well as the United States' Under-17, Under-19 and Under-20 teams.

Liverpool's former Under-18s manager, Marc Bridge-Wilkinson, previously outlined Figueroa's best positions, saying: “He can play both [centrally and from the right wing] and he can score goals and create moving forwards... There are lots of things that he can do, whether he plays in the middle or slightly off one side.”

Isak returned to Liverpool's training ground earlier than the other Reds players who were on international duty this week, with the Swede clearly keen to get back up to speed having barely played since the end of last season.

It was the absence of most of Liverpool's senior players which meant Figueroa was called up to train alongside Isak.

While Figueroa is potentially one for the future, the £125 million ($169 million) man he trained alongside on Wednesday is very much one for the now.

Isak could play some part against Burnley this weekend but is unlikely to start given his lack of game time in recent months.

On Friday, Arne Slot spoke to journalists at his first press conference since Isak became a Liverpool player, and he was asked for his early impression of the striker.

"Maybe people don’t believe me if I give you this answer but I haven’t spoken to him that much," Slot responded.

"So, I spoke to him after he signed by phone because he had to go to the national team and the way I, 99 out of 100 times, treat my players during international breaks is I leave them for the manager they are working with over there.

"So, I texted him now maybe once or twice because he is new to us [and] I wanted to know how he did. But I do have to get to know him as a person much better in the upcoming days and weeks.

"But although we find it very important how someone is because we have such a great culture here at this club, we mainly sign a player also for his qualities and therefore I don’t need to call them. We faced him a few times, I faced him a few times, and I know what a quality player he is."
