Liverpool's fans were left fuming after the Reds were on the receiving end of a terrible officiating decision less than quarter of an hour into the new season.
Hugo Ekitike looked as though he might be in a position to drive toward the Bournemouth goal when Marcos Senesi handled the ball and knocked it out of the Frenchman's path.
While the initial contact between Senesi's hand and the ball was accidental, there was a second contact during the same passage of play which appeared to be intentional.
However, for some reason, a free-kick was awarded to Bournemouth. The video assistant referee reviewed the incident and confirmed the on-field decision, with the reason given that Senesi's movement when his arm made contact with the ball was a natural one.
Jamie Carragher criticized the decision while on co-commentary duty for Sky Sports. “We can hear what the VAR are saying. They’re saying it’s come off his leg and hit his hand like you can’t do anything about it," Carragher said. "But it’s not. He realises he’s got a massive problem and he puts his arm towards the ball.
“How the VAR can say that. I really don’t like seeing people sent off, that’s a last resort. But what I’ve just heard from the VAR did not happen. There’s plenty of time and he throws his hand at it. The information the referee got was not correct.”
