Premier League explains VAR decision after Liverpool handed penalty verdict vs Chelsea

20 hours ago 36

The Premier League has released its official explanation as to why Chelsea was denied a penalty late on in the first half of its game against Liverpool.

Having taken the lead through Moises Caicedo, the hosts felt they should have been given the opportunity to extend their lead from the spot after Alejandro Garnacho went down under Dominik Szoboszlai's challenge. The former Manchester United winger indicated he had been pushed by the Reds' midfielder, but referee Anthony Taylor waved away the shouts.

VAR would go on to confirm the decision, with Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca receiving a yellow card as protested furiously and argued with Liverpool's coaching staff.

Explaining why VAR chose not to intervene, a post on the Premier League Match Centre's account on X said: "The referee’s call of no penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the contact from Szoboszlai on Garnacho deemed to be minimal."
