Denmark were beaten 4-2 by Scotland at Hampden on Tuesday night, with the Danes having needed just a point to secure automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup
The Danish national team's coach has been heavily criticised by local media following their 4-2 defeat to Scotland, a result that cost them automatic qualification for the World Cup. A Fulham defender also expressed his X-rated disappointment over the loss.
In an exciting qualifying match on Tuesday, Denmark were defeated by Scotland at Hampden. The hosts took the lead with a spectacular overhead kick from Scott McTominay, only for Rasmus Hojlund to equalise with a penalty.
Lawrence Shankland put Scotland back in front after converting a corner, but their lead was short-lived as Patrick Dorgu quickly equalised. Denmark only needed a draw to secure their place in next year's World Cup.
However, they were unable to maintain their position, and following a stunning goal from Kieran Tierney and a last-minute goal from Kenny McLean on the halfway line, Denmark will now have to compete in a qualifying play-off. The defeat has not been well-received by the media in Denmark.
"Terrible scenes"
Following the defeat, which came after a crucial 2-2 draw against Belarus on Saturday, Danish reporters have been highly critical of their country's performance.
Publication B.T. described the defeat as "terrible scenes" and criticised manager Brian Riemer. They wrote: "We're knocking you again, Riemer. The pressure is now enormous on you before the playoff games. This is a huge failure."
One of Denmark's largest newspapers, Ekstra Bladet, pulled no punches with their headline following the defeat. It read: "Total Danish humiliation." VG added: "It's so insane that it can't be described in words."
Fulham star in profanity-laden rant
Fulham centre-back Joachim Andersen played the entire match at Hampden and received a yellow card after just 10 minutes. He spoke to Danish outlet TV 2 Sport after the final whistle and appeared visibly frustrated.
"I'm incredibly sad," said Andersen. "The results we've delivered in the last two games are laughable. I'm just disappointed. I'm disappointed. I think we played a good game.
"They score a freak goal. He'll never score a goal like that again in his career. Of course, it's difficult when we get the red card," he added. "And then we make such stupid mistakes. That should never happen. I don't know what to say. It's just disappointing and f*****g ridiculous."
Denmark coach singled out
B.T. directed some criticism towards head coach Riemer, but outlet Bold went considerably further and were scathing in their assessment of how the manager organised his side on the night.
"It seemed to be a strategy for Denmark to play free on the wings and from there send balls into the box. The red-shirted team scooped one cross after another," they wrote.
"The problem was that it didn't work at all. If there's one thing the Scottish defence can do, it's dominate the air, and only 21 per cent of the Danish crosses ended up with a team-mate. That strategy failed, Brian Riemer."
