Robin van Persie is facing mounting scrutiny following Feyenoord's woeful goalless stalemate against FC Volendam, a result that handed the Eredivisie title to PSV Eindhoven.

It was also another tough day for former Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling. The Rotterdam team was held to a goalless draw by the 14th-placed outfit on Sunday. Volendam had lost its previous three matches, with the traveling Feyenoord supporters making their displeasure abundantly clear at full-time.

Chants of "shame on you" rang out from the visiting faithful after a third draw in four league fixtures left Feyenoord 17 points behind PSV. Those two dropped points proved sufficient to officially confirm PSV as the champion.

It was a lackluster display from Feyenoord, which saw Anis Hadj-Moussa and Anel Ahmedhodzic join its already substantial injury list. Sterling once again occupied a wide position but squandered his solitary opportunity, firing wide of the post.

The former Chelsea and Manchester City star was withdrawn by Van Persie, who cut a furious figure on the touchline. The former Arsenal and Manchester United frontman was booked for protesting after his side was denied what he felt was a penalty.

Feyenoord now sits just one point ahead of NEC in the battle for second place, which carries automatic Champions League qualification.

"It certainly wasn't fantastic, we need to defend better and we should have created more. It was enough to score one, but it should have been more," Van Persie told ESPN post-match.

Addressing the supporters' chants directed at him and his squad, he responded: "No. They worked hard; everyone saw that. We could have made it easier for ourselves by being better on the ball."

Sterling has endured a difficult period since terminating his Chelsea contract to join Feyenoord in January. He's managed just one assist across six Eredivisie appearances while attempting to regain match sharpness after an extended spell out of action at Stamford Bridge.

Van Persie championed the signing of the 31-year-old and has repeatedly emphasized the importance of patience. However, it appears that tolerance is beginning to fade among the Rotterdam faithful.

"We made some wrong choices, I did too at one point. We need to be sharper in that regard," Feyenoord midfielder Luciano Valente remarked.

"We are already struggling; in matches like this, you really have to finish your chances. If you score, the spaces open up afterwards. We lost the ball too easily, and that's when they come into their own."

When questioned about supporters' frustrations, he commented: "We've been hearing that for a while. We are second; it is clear that the game isn't great. The emotions are logical. We can't do much with them.

"Not that they are wrong, but we have to move on week by week. We have one objective: Champions League football. We are still second, however bizarre that may be."
