It remains uncertain what the next step will be for Raheem Sterling, but the 31-year-old appears open to a return to Liverpool, even if the Anfield hierarchy may not share the same enthusiasm.
Sterling’s difficult spell at Chelsea finally came to an end this week, with the former Liverpool star released after three-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge. The 31-year-old’s exit was confirmed on Wednesday, with Chelsea stating that a mutual agreement had been reached for Sterling to depart immediately, despite 18 months remaining on his contract.
Sterling joined the Blues from Manchester City in the summer of 2022 but struggled to replicate the form he displayed at the Etihad. He fell out of favor at Chelsea in 2024 and spent last season on loan at Arsenal, marking a challenging period in his career.

Yet, based on his 2020 comments, he would eagerly seize the opportunity for a sensational return to Liverpool.
"Would I ever go back to Liverpool? To be honest with you, I love Liverpool," Sterling admitted, while still at the Etihad.
At the time, Manchester City was appealing a two-season Champions League ban, which was eventually overturned.
When City was ready to move Sterling the following summer, Chelsea emerged as the club to take him.
A return to Liverpool now seems even more unlikely than it did back then. Nevertheless, Sterling has made it clear he still holds the Reds in high regard, and there’s little doubt he would welcome an Anfield lifeline if the opportunity arose.

When Enzo Maresca replaced Pochettino at Chelsea, Sterling was left out of the squad for his first match, making it clear he was not part of the new manager’s plans.
Time appears to have caught up with the 31-year-old, who made his Liverpool debut back in 2012 and has yet to play this season.
Clubs that have shown interest, including Fulham and West Ham, have not pursued moves, with Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna noting: “Raheem is very strong, but he hasn’t played for a long time... He has significant financial expectations.”
Sterling’s departure represents a substantial financial saving for Chelsea, as his contract still had 18 months remaining and had not been fully paid.
While he is too young to retire, it seems his days at the very top of the game are likely over.
However, there may still be managers willing to take a chance on reviving the England international’s career.
