Chelsea and England ace Raheem Sterling has been targeted by burglars for a shocking second time. The incident occurred while the winger was at home, with masked intruders attempting a break-in.

The incident took place at 7pm on Saturday, just an hour before Chelsea's clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge. Thankfully, everyone inside the house managed to escape unscathed and the culprits failed to make off with any valuables, seemingly taken aback that Sterling was in residence.

A police report has subsequently been lodged, reports the Mirror.

A spokesperson quoted by the Mail confirmed: "We can confirm that Raheem Sterling was the victim of a home break-in this weekend. We can also confirm that he and his children were present at home at the time.

"Whilst the ultimate violation of privacy and safety, we are thankful to be able to confirm that he and his loved ones are all safe. We ask that the privacy of Raheem and his loved ones be respected at this challenging time."

Sterling has had a tough spell at Chelsea, finding himself sidelined from the club's Premier League squad under Enzo Maresca. He spent the previous season on loan with London rivals Arsenal.

Sterling, previously of Manchester City, had his former Cheshire residence also targeted previously, leading to suggestions that top-tier footballers are now hiring ex-MMA fighters for additional security.

A security consultant told The Mail: "I can tell you that one massive club with several players in the Cheshire area has boosted security. They have now drafted in a couple of former MMA fighters to bodyguard the players and their families.

"One of the lads does the close protection work while the other is a house sitter. That means he stay in the house when the player is away with the club.

"The gangs tend to pull the big jobs when the players are away in Europe. Both the former MMA fighters are very confident when it comes to physical confrontations and would not back off if something happened.

"They look after the players and their families when they are out on the street when things can happen. If a young players wants to go to nightclub they will take them and make sure nothing happens. These lads have fought at the highest levels and are highly capable."
