Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is set to meet Mohamed Salah’s agent as they look to settle the winger’s future at Anfield.

Although Arne Slot managed to repair some bridges with Salah before he headed off to the Africa Cup of Nations, with the 33-year-old having apologized to his teammates for his outburst earlier in the month, his future still looks uncertain as the January transfer window approaches.

Salah had suggested that the game against Brighton, in which he came off the bench after being left out of the squad against Inter Milan, could have been his last for the club, although he didn’t appear to give much away at full-time.

Subsequent reports have suggested that Salah will end up staying at Anfield beyond the January window, with Alexander Isak’s broken leg leaving Liverpool short on attacking options.

The winger’s future could be decided soon, with Hughes set for showdown talks with Salah’s agent while he’s away at AFCON. According to the Daily Mail, the club’s sporting director is expected to meet Ramy Abbas for face-to-face talks.

It’s suggested in the report that a January exit is unlikely, although a transfer in the summer could be a possibility, with Saudi Arabian clubs still on red alert and ready to pounce if there’s a suggestion that Salah wants to leave Liverpool.

Slot though has insisted that he and the player have moved on, despite Salah having claimed that his relationship with the Reds’ boss had broken down during his explosive outburst.

"I've said last week, actions speak louder than words,” Slot said before the game against Tottenham. “We've moved on. He was in the squad and he was the first substitution I made.

"Now he's at the AFCON playing big games for himself but also for the country, so I think it's fair to them — but definitely also for us because we are going to play some very important games — that all the focus for him is over there and there should not be any distraction from me saying anything about his time at Liverpool.

"What I said: we've moved on after the Leeds interview and he played against Brighton. Now he is there, so it's fair for the country, for him and also for us to talk about Tottenham and other games and for them to be fully focused on their tournament."

Liverpool.com says: Even if Liverpool and Slot don’t see Salah as a guaranteed starter anymore, it would be far too hasty to offload him in January.

He hasn’t been anywhere near his best this season, but he still has a lot to offer, and considering the lack of options in attack at the moment, Liverpool can’t be letting him go just yet.
