English sports presenter Richard Keys has been slammed for telling fans they can 'distract' themselves from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East by watching a Premier League fixture on Tuesday night.

The U.S. and Israel initiated attacks in Iran and killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, leading to retaliatory strikes in the region. Former Liverpool star Graeme Souness has been stranded in Abu Dhabi as a result, unable to catch a flight home.

Former Liverpool star Sadio Mane was also impacted, with the Saudi Pro League postponing several fixtures due to safety concerns. Keys, who works for beIN Sports, which is based in Qatar, has now been called out for his out-of-touch suggestion during a worrying period.

Keys was forced off the air after the region descended into chaos, and the beIN Sports coverage has instead come from London. On Tuesday, beIN Sports will broadcast the two Premier League fixtures scheduled for that day.

Bournemouth hosts Brentford before Wolverhampton Wanderers face Liverpool, and Keys believes it could be a necessary distraction for those impacted. "Thoughts & prayers with everyone who has lost loved ones during these past few days of madness," Keys wrote on X.

"I know this sounds trite but hopefully the football tonight @beINSPORTS_EN can act as a distraction for a short time? Stay safe."

Fans didn't respond well to Keys' post and let him know in the comments. "Your sensitivity and compassion here only underline what a genuinely lovely guy you are Richard. Take care mate," one fan sarcastically wrote on X.

"Just when you think you’ve seen everything, Keys blows it out of the water. Wow," another added. "Wow. Sorry you've lost all of your family but I'm on TV tonight to take your mind off that minor issue," a third wrote.

"Read the room…..although that’s why you aren’t on British TV screens anymore, as you have a history of that issue!" another fan brutally added.

"Sounds trite because it’s a moronic thing to say," one fan claimed.
