Despite Liverpool's 2025/26 proving largely frustrating, it could end on a high note, with cup success a possibility still, and the performance at Molinuex underlined how good the Reds can be

Rob Edwards gave a glowing endorsement of Liverpool after Wolves' FA Cup defeat
Rob Edwards claimed Wolverhampton Wanderers “couldn’t live” with Liverpool’s intensity in Friday’s FA Cup tie.
The Reds won 3-1 at Molineux thanks to second-half goals from Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah and Curtis Jones, while Hwang Hee-chan netted a late consolation for Wolves. After a slow first period, which drew criticism from pundits Danny Murphy and Alan Shearer, the Reds significantly improved after the half-time interval.
Liverpool produced six shots on target, double the number generated in the opening 45, while registering an expected goals of 1.30. Edwards admitted after the game that he was hugely impressed with the performance of Arne Slot’s side.

“I have no qualms or excuses. I thought their level was excellent and they deserved to win. If you have a double-header against Liverpool, any team, for us to win one of those games was a big thing,” he added, referencing the 2-1 Premier League victory on Tuesday.
“Liverpool’s level went up. I don’t think we dropped [our level] but they made it very difficult for us.

“Their intensity and counter-pressing was better. They won the ball back quicker. There were moments on Tuesday where we got through them and that’s what we planned to do if they pressed in the same way.
“But I felt Liverpool's intensity was better and it was difficult to get through or around them tonight. They took it up a notch and we couldn’t quite live with them.”
Those comments should act as a ringing endorsement of Slot’s Liverpool, and for all the issues this season, that it can still produce such high-level performances bodes well for the future.

Robertson said it can still be a special season for Liverpool
The frustrating campaign can still end in success, of course, with the Reds progressing to the FA Cup quarter-finals, while the Champions League returns next week with a trip to Galatasaray in the last-16.
Robertson said after Friday’s game that this can still be a special season for Liverpool. “Of course it can. We try to fight on all fronts. Obviously, the Carabao Cup didn't work out, the Premier League hasn't worked out, but we're still in two cup competitions,” he told BBC Sport.
“If we play like we did tonight, then nobody wants to play against us. But we've just been a little bit inconsistent this season, that's the fact of it.
“If we perform like we did tonight, then I think we'll be better off for it, and we can go far in both competitions.”
