Rodrygo opens up on Real Madrid exit talk after Liverpool links - 'Not going to lie'

3 hours ago 3

With Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior both favoring the left wing berth and Franco Mastantuono arriving at Real Madrid from River Plate, Rodrygo was linked with a move away from the Bernabeu this summer including being put forward as an option for Liverpool in some quarters.

Nothing came of the speculation, though, with Arsenal, Manchester City, and PSG also suggested as potential landing spots for the 24-year-old, and he ended up staying with Real Madrid. And Rodrygo has now insisted that he never wanted to leave and go anywhere else.

"Every summer, the same thing happens to me. Whether I'm going to leave or whether I have offers from this club or that," the Brazilian winger told the Spanish outlet AS.

"Every week, I was in a team if I paid attention to what was published. Of course, there are always offers; I'm not going to lie about that.

"But I always made it clear to the club that I want to continue succeeding here, even more than I already have. It's a lot to have won two Champions Leagues at my age, but now I want more European Cups in this shirt.

"I've always said, 'As long as Real Madrid wants me, I'll be here.' If one day Real Madrid says to me, 'Rodry, find a team,' I'll say, 'OK.' But that hasn't happened.

"The club has always told me they count on me. And when I had a problem, they were there for me. People speculated because I kept quiet.

"But I knew what I was going to do this season with Real Madrid, and that I'm going to be focused on giving my best. It hasn't bothered me. I was calm, and here I am... as always. This is my seventh season."

Liverpool spent big on the likes of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike to bolster its attack before signing Alexander Isak on transfer deadline day.

It also has Rio Ngumoha emerging and doesn't want to block the development pathway of the talented England youth international, who was signed from Chelsea in 2024.

This isn't the first time that Rodrygo has attempted to set the record straight on the summer.

"I'm used to it; every year they say I’m leaving. During the transfer window, every week I was on a different team," Rodrygo told TNT Sports Brazil after Real Madrid's Champions League win over Marseille last month.

"I even joked with my parents and friends: 'Look, today I'm on this one, tomorrow I’m on that one.' Every week I was on a different team, but, as I said, I was very calm mentally and it didn’t affect me at all.

"I continued enjoying my vacation, training because I knew this was where I would continue. Well, in the end, I'm still at home, in the place I always dreamed of being. I'll continue giving my all every day I wear this shirt."

Liverpool.com says: Rodrygo is an exceptional player, but he has never really wanted to leave Real Madrid before. If he were forced out, he would go, but any club signing him would be taking a risk, as he might not really want to be there.
