Roy Keane outlines Michael Carrick 'dream scenario' and Man United's 'realistic' target

Michael Carrick oversaw Manchester United's huge 2-0 win against neighbours Man City with Roy Keane revealing what their ultimate aims should be this season.

Roy Keane has delivered a thorough Manchester United verdict after their 2-0 victory vs Manchester City at Old Trafford. Despite the superb win, the club's former midfielder has urged that no one should get carried away with Michael Carrick having the dream scenario for his first game.

With the conversation in the Sky Sports studio based around the manner of United's triumph, Keane said: "If you look at a lot of managers' careers and timing - Carrick has come in. and it's the dream scenario for him to come in, everyone's available, you've got Manchester City at home who haven't been... they've been off it a little bit.

"You're at home, you've got players available, you could have had a man sent off. Timing, a little bit of luck, they've made the most of it. Take nothing away from them and I'm happy to give credit where it's due, they were fantastic today; but everybody just calm down. That's me saying that."

United moved up to fourth place following their victory but will likely drop down the table once the teams around them have played. However, with several of those failing to build consistency, United could feasibly qualify for next season's Champions League, especially with no games in other competitions.

Keane also spoke in detail about what United's ambitions should be and where Carrick's future lies - regardless of where they finish. He began: "What's his target, to finish fourth? Fifth of course would get into Europe, but fourth is realistic.

"And you're sitting here thinking; 'That's what Manchester United should be thinking'. We shouldn't be scratching our heads and going; 'Can United finish fourth'? In the last week or two when we've been doing games and we've been disappointed in United, we've been saying; 'Fourth is a realistic target'.

"In the last few months we've been saying, because of the way the league is at the moment, there is a chance for United to finish fourth; it's not miracles we're talking about here.

"If he gets to fourth and doesn't get the job, it'll still leave Carrick to go and get a job somewhere- because people will go; 'Look at the way he's handled himself, he's been great, he's been cool, and their players have been positive'. Most people who would've took this job today would've played that way."

United have looked excellent in small spells this campaign with dropped points at home to Wolves, West Ham United, Everton and Bournemouth playing a role in their slump.

Keane was on hand to provide his prediction and expectation for United. He added: "Well I thought the last few months that they were going to miss out.

"But when you see them perform like that and everyone is available and because of the way the league is this year, a lot of teams have been inconsistent barring maybe Villa.

"Of course Arsenal and, well City, have; you're thinking there is a realistic chance, but there's five or six teams who will be thinking that.

"If the team can play with that quality and energy week in and week out - and of course that is the key - then of course they've got a chance."
