Ruben Amorim said that his players should be motivated by the future, rather than past successes, as he looked ahead to Manchester United's game at Anfield on Sunday.
The Red Devils head to Merseyside aiming to win back-to-back Premier League games for the first time since the Portuguese's arrival at Old Trafford almost a year ago.
United hasn't won at Anfield since 2016, when Wayne Rooney scored the winning goal in Jurgen Klopp's first Liverpool-United encounter.
United also beat Liverpool away from home a year earlier, with Juan Mata scoring a brace — including a stunning bicycle kick — in a 2-1 victory.
Amorim was asked whether he could use those game-winning contributions from Rooney and Mata to motivate his players in his pre-game team talk, but he suggested that wouldn't be necessary.
“There are so many things to use with the players, like the chance to win two games in a row," Amorim said. "I think they don’t remember those matches.
"Unfortunately, today’s footballers don’t watch many games. So we have a lot of things to work with — that’s not the hardest part.
"We have so much to gain if we perform well, if we win the next match, that I don’t need to use those games from the past. We just need to try to show them what it could mean for our future.”
Amorim was asked how long it would take for him to get United to a stage where it is challenging Liverpool at the top of the sport, but neglected to give a definitive answer.
"Sometimes, things change really fast but, if you see the history of both clubs, you can feel that sometimes you have one club that is winning, winning, winning, the other club is having a bad moment.
"That happened with Liverpool, when Manchester United was winning everything, and that happened with Manchester United, when Liverpool was winning everything.
"So, we just have to acknowledge that, to be really honest with the fans. But we can win any game, so if we think about just winning the next game, that is the most important thing.
"We can win the next game. If we are going to fight to be at the same level as Liverpool in the future, that is the idea. I don't know how long it is going to take.”
