Sadio Mane’s AFCON legacy took a stunning twist after a major ruling changed the outcome of one of African football’s wildest finals

For Sadio Mane, the Africa Cup of Nations was once “the best trophy of my life.”

On Tuesday, one of Senegal’s greatest modern football achievements was erased in a stunning reversal after the Confederation of African Football’s appeal board overturned the result of the 2025 AFCON final and awarded the title to Morocco.

CAF ruled that Senegal had forfeited the final after players walked off the pitch for more than 10 minutes in protest when a late penalty was awarded to Morocco following a VAR review. Although Brahim Diaz missed the penalty and Senegal went on to win 1-0 after extra time, the appeal board found that the team’s conduct fell under Articles 82 and 84 of AFCON regulations.

The official result has now been recorded as a 3-0 victory for Morocco.
