World Cup qualifying, Group C: Scotland v Greece

Venue: Hampden Park, Glasgow Date: Thursday, 9 October Kick-off: 19:45 BST

Coverage: Watch on BBC Scotland, listen on BBC Radio Scotland & Radio Nan Gaidheal, follow live text coverage on the BBC Sport website & app.

Scotland could go a long way towards qualifying for next year's World Cup in the next few days - and the BBC has you covered all the way on TV, radio and online.

Broadcasting details to come later, but first let us remind ourselves of how European qualifying Group C stands as Steve Clarke's side prepare to host Greece on Thursday - then Belarus on Sunday.

Only goal difference separates Scotland from leaders Denmark, with Greece just a point further behind.

Given the smaller groups this time round, six points are probably essential if the Scots want to finish top of the section and secure automatic qualification.

Anything less and they might have to aim for a play-off place given there would only be two games left to play - tough ones too, away to Greece and at home to Denmark - in November.

A draw in Denmark and a win in Belarus have set Scotland up nicely for the rest of the campaign.

But beating the Greeks will not be easy - and not just because they are three places above the Scots in 40th place (down one while Clarke's side are up four) in the latest world rankings.

While the Scots won the first leg of their Nations League play-off in March 1-0 in Athens, Ivan Jovanović's side avenged that - and then some - with a 3-0 victory in the return at Hampden to relegate their hosts to League B.

The Greeks again arrive looking for a change in fortunes considering they failed to build on their 5-1 opening-day thrashing of Belarus when they suffered a 3-0 defeat of their own at home to the Danes last time out.

Beat the Greeks and you imagine Sunday should take care of itself given Belarus, currently ranked 100th in the world, are fancied to emerge from Thursday's home game against Denmark still without a point.

Will Gordon start for Scotland?

While just short of half of Clarke's 23-strong squad - and six of the 11 starters in Belarus - either started on the bench or did not play for their clubs over the weekend, they at least appear to be injury free.

The biggest intrigue is probably in goal, with 42-year-old Craig Gordon having returned to the Heart of Midlothian squad on Saturday after missing the start of the season through injury.

He has still not played this term, but incumbent Angus Gunn finds himself not even on the Nottingham Forest bench, while Liam Kelly is playing a back-up role for Rangers.

Two experienced defenders - Olympiacos' Panagiotis Retsos and Panathinaikos' Giorgos Kyriakopoulos - and PAOK midfielder Dimitrios Pelkas miss out this time from the Greece squad that faced Denmark.

PAOK defender Giannis Michailidis has been drafted in, while there is a first call-up for 23-year-old striker Pantelidis Pavlos, who helped Kifisias win the Greek second tier last season.
