Sections of Mancunian Way are set to be closed next week for ‘essential inspection works’, the council has announced.

The city centre motorway’s ‘inner lanes’ closest to the central reservation will be closed from next Monday (September 29) to Saturday (October 4).

Closures along the whole length of the road will be in place overnight from 7pm until 6am, and the road is expected to open as normal outside these times. Slip roads will be unaffected by the lane shut-downs.

Congestion could be worse than usual on the Friday and Saturday.

On Friday (October 3), thousands of music fans will head to Co-op Live to see The Kooks perform at the same time Manchester City host a titanic Women’s Super League clash against Arsenal.

Kick-off at Eastlands’ Joie Stadium is at 7pm. Across town, Darius Rucker will also perform at the AO Arena.

That Saturday (October 4), Manchester United will play Sunderland in a Premier League match at Old Trafford but kick-off is 3pm so most fans should have left the area by the time traffic cones are put out.

Later that evening, however, Co-op Live will be packed out with thousands of comedy fans to see Liverpudlian John Bishop.

Earlier in the week, thousands are expected at the AO Arena on Wednesday (October 1) to see Deacon Blue.

Despite the likely disruption, the town hall says the closures are needed to protect inspectors as the council plans to replace parts of the Mancunian Way central reservation next year.

Councillor Anthony McCaul, deputy executive member for clean air, environment and transport, said: “We’re grateful for people’s patience during these inspection works. The Mancunian Way is a vital piece of the city’s transport infrastructure and it’s really important that we regularly ensure that it is safe for use.”
