Six-time La Liga winner has no intention of joining Tottenham, as huge wages prove tricky

1 hour ago 36

Journalist Dean Jones has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have to overcome a couple of big obstacles to sign a six-time La Liga winner in January.

Reports indicate that Spurs have started looking for potential replacements for Guglielmo Vicario, which may not come as a surprise to Tottenham fans, given the unforced errors the Italian has made this season.

Various names have been put forward as potential replacements for the former Empoli man, including a big-name Barcelona star.

It has been suggested that Tottenham are eyeing a move for Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who has now fallen behind Joan Garcia in Hansi Flick’s pecking order.

Tottenham face big obstacles in Marc-Andre ter Stegen pursuit

Some sources have claimed that Ter Stegen is waiting for Tottenham to make a move, with the German international wanting to play in the Premier League.

However, journalist Dean Jones has now explained that the 33-year-old’s salary may be prohibitive for Spurs and revealed that the experienced goalkeeper is not too keen on a January exit.

When asked about the speculation over Ter Stegen’s future, Jones told TEAMtalk: “It’s not going to be straightforward, as his high wages are going to prove to be an obstacle as well as his desire to move.

“He returned to the Barcelona side this week for his first game in a long time, yet there is no long-term plan for him at the club.

“As one of the highest-paid players in the squad, it’s not ideal to just have him on the bench, but there does not seem to be much intent from him to move.”

Barca are hoping Spurs make an offer for Ter Stegen

While the Germany international may not be keen on an exit from Camp Nou, Jones revealed that Barca are intent on getting him off their wage bill.

The club are hoping that at least a loan offer arrives from the Premier League, but as things stand, no English club has made a concrete move.

Jones added: “I’m told Barca have been hoping that an English side might show interest – even on loan – to cover some of the financial hit.

“Indeed, the Premier League has the most spending power, so it’s seen as one of the most likely destinations he could consider. But at the moment, there are no concrete signs of a move.

“Barcelona attempted to offload Ter Stegen during the summer and brought in Joan Garcia, and the hope has been that he shows a renewed willingness to move in order to secure regular playing time ahead of the World Cup.

“In England, the likes of Tottenham, Chelsea and West Ham are viewed as potential destinations that could be targeted. Indeed, that follows up on information also gathered by my colleague Fraser Fletcher surrounding Ter Stegen’s future. However, at present, I’m told there is no active interest in the 33-year-old Germany international.”
