The world of soccer is in mourning following the tragic death of ex-Liverpool women's coach Matt Beard.

The 47-year-old's passing was announced on Saturday night, with Liverpool describing Beard as an "extremely committed and successful manager". In statement the club added he was "a person of real integrity and warmth, who will always be remembered with genuine fondness".

"He parted company with LFC Women in February, following a significant contribution to the club’s development and many memorable moments and achievements during his multiple tenures."

Beard enjoyed two spells with Liverpool, winning two Women's Super League (WSL) titles. He left the club in February and took charge of Burnley. In an interview with Forbes last month, midfielder Mel Lawley spoke highly of his coaching credentials and character

"I think, playing however many years with Beardie, I know how he likes to play. I know him as a person, he’s an amazing man.

Beard is considered Liverpool's greatest-ever coach of the women's side.

"He wants you to be a better person before you step out on the pitch. Working with Beardie, you want to fight for him, play as well as you can for him."

Liverpool reporter Beth Lindop wrote on X: "When Matt Beard returned to LFC in 2021, the club was in the 2nd tier & - quite frankly - a bit of a mess. Within a year, they were back in the WSL, thanks in no small part to his efforts. Whatever future success the club has, it’ll have been built on the foundations he laid."

The WSL released a statement via social media after the tragic news broke on Saturday, stating: "Everyone at WSL Football extends its deepest sympathies to the family, friends and loved ones of Matt Beard following news of his passing.

"Matt played an instrumental role in the growth of women's football and will be missed by everyone associated with the game."

The FA said: "We're deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Matt Beard. Matt was a key figure in growing the women's game and will be missed by all. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time."

Beard's former club West Ham United said in a statement: "West Ham United is deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of former manager Matt Beard. The thoughts and condolences of everyone at the Club are with Matt’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time."

Millwall, where Beard began his career in the professional game, added: "Everybody at the club is deeply saddened by the passing of former Lionesses manager, Matt Beard.

"We send all our love and support to his family, friends and colleagues across the many clubs he managed at this very difficult time."
