Sol Campbell says Tottenham defender is better than Virgil van Dijk in shock claim

Sol Campbell has revealed where he would rank a Tottenham centre-back among the best defenders across the Premier League.

One senses that Tottenham’s centre-back pairing is finally starting to get the credit that they deserve in light of the club’s improved defensive performances under Thomas Frank.

Many pundits have derided Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven due to the number of goals Spurs conceded under Ange Postecoglou, but the pair have shown how good they are as part of a side who are better organised defensively this season.

Tottenham boast the second-best defensive record across the Premier League, and many feel that Spurs’ ambitions this season will be dictated by whether Romero and Van de Ven stay fit.

Sol Campbell reveals where he ranks Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven

Sol Campbell has now been asked to rate the best three centre-backs playing in the Premier League, and interestingly, he picked Van de Ven ahead of Romero.

The former Spurs man named the Dutchman in third place after Arsenal’s centre-back duo, leaving out Virgil van Dijk from his list.

Campbell told GiveMeSport on TikTok: “Oh, current? I would say, number one and number two, Saliba is in there, I think Gabriel is two, and number three is Van de Ven.”

Cristian Romero does not get the credit he deserves

While Van de Ven seems to be more highly rated by neutrals and the voices in the media, most Tottenham fans who watch the side every week will pick Romero over the Netherlands international.

The Spurs captain still does not get the credit he deserves from media circles, with Joleon Lescott recently claiming Romero is the most overrated player in the Premier League.

However, the 27-year-old is certainly respected a lot by his teammates, with Julian Alvarez recently naming Romero as the best defender in the world.
