Viktor Gyokeres returns to face former club Sporting as Arsenal meet the Portuguese side in this week's Champions League quarter-finals. The Gunners arrive having endured back-to-back defeats - losing to Manchester City in the EFL Cup final before falling 2-1 to Southampton in Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final - while Sporting enter the fixture on a three-game winning streak.
Arsenal's pursuit of an unprecedented quadruple had gained momentum earlier in the season, but the previous week has significantly dented aspirations of a complete trophy haul. Following a second-place finish against Pep Guardiola's City at Wembley, Mikel Arteta's team then couldn't convert superiority into success at St Mary's, where Gyokeres's leveller proved insufficient to avoid their first consecutive defeats of the campaign.
Nevertheless, Arsenal remain well-positioned in the race for honours. They hold a nine-point advantage at the Premier League summit - though having contested one match more than second-placed City - and their resumption of Champions League duties provides a welcome opportunity to refocus.
They are also the sole side yet to taste defeat in Europe's elite competition this term. Arsenal finished top of the league phase with an unblemished record before eliminating Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16, securing a late draw at the BayArena before confirming progression with a 2-0 second-leg victory at the Emirates courtesy of strikes from Eberechi Eze and Declan Rice. It secured a third consecutive quarter-final berth. As Arsenal pursue a second successive semi-final berth - and only their fourth overall - Gyokeres will be eager to make an impact on familiar ground. The Sweden forward, recruited from Sporting in the summer of 2025 following 97 goals in 102 appearances for the Lions, was representing the opposition when the sides previously met, a November 2024 fixture at Estadio Jose Alvalade that concluded in a comprehensive 5-1 Arsenal victory.
Sporting, who haven't won in normal time across five encounters with Arsenal, can nevertheless draw encouragement from their exceptional home record. Rui Borges's charges have secured 17 consecutive victories on their own patch, a sequence that includes Friday's 4-2 triumph over Santa Clara, with Pedro Goncalves, Daniel Braganca, Francisco Trincao and Rafael Nel all finding the net to maintain the Lions' second place in the Primeira Liga.
Their Champions League campaign has similarly been founded upon Jose Alvalade. Sporting have claimed victory in all five European home fixtures this season - defeating Kairat Almaty, Marseille, Club Brugge and Paris Saint Germain en route to a top-eight league-phase finish.
They demonstrated their credentials in the last 16, overcoming a 3-0 first-leg deficit to Bodo/Glimt by demolishing the Norwegians 5-0 at home to become just the fifth side to overturn a three-goal disadvantage in the Champions League knockout stages. That resurgence has fuelled Sporting's current form, with the Lions claiming victory in their previous three fixtures while netting a minimum of four goals in each - momentum they'll be hoping continues into Tuesday's clash against an Arsenal defence that may be under strain.
