Arsenal had a busy summer transfer window with significant spending and have benefitted from it, but the Gunners may still spend more money in January
Arsenal could spend over £100million in the January window, says a football finance expert. Mikel Arteta's side are performing well in the Premier League after spending a lot in the summer.
The Gunners fired on all cylinders in the last transfer window, signing six new recruits for a grand total of around £250m. The main new additions were new striker Viktor Gyokeres and attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze.
Owner Stan Kroenke was able to authorise these moves following several profitable years. Since 2021, his net worth has risen from £6.4billion to an impressive £17.7bn, marking a 175 per cent increase.
Despite their expensive summer transfer window, Arsenal remain in a position where they could choose to spend heavily again this January, according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire.
"We haven't seen their financial results for this year yet, but they will have a lot of headroom from a PSR point of view," Maguire told the Mirror.
"Arsenal have got plenty of wiggle room in January. Yes, they signed players in the summer but even so, compared to some of the other clubs, it wasn't excessive.
"They have got Champions League participation as well. That is the big one. The Champions League has never been worth as much money as it is at present and it's where all of the growth is. The Premier League is sort of flatlining.
"Champions League, with the new deal that's come in with the Swiss model… it's simple things. Every match that you win is worth £2million. Arsenal have had a fantastic start to the competition already.
"So if Arsenal wanted to spend, they could spend far in excess of £100million. I think the issue is whether players are available who are not cup-tied from a Champions League point of view.
"Arsenal are very strong financially. Their losses in the last couple of years were £70m and under the Premier League rules you are allowed to lose £105m. So again, they have got plenty of headroom. A very smart club."
Whether the Gunners will make new signings in the January transfer window remains uncertain. Last January, Arteta's team were satisfied with their summer transfers and did not sign anyone new.
They did consider signing a striker but decided to wait until the summer to acquire Gyokeres from Sporting CP, signing him initially for £55.5m, which could increase if certain conditions are met.
Their quiet January in 2025 allowed them to spend significantly in the summer, becoming one of the top five biggest net spenders worldwide with over £250m.
