One key stat shows that a Tottenham star remains among the best in the Premier League despite coming under plenty of criticism from fans and the media.

Several Spurs stars have been the subject of plenty of social media wrath this season in light of the Lilywhites’ shocking displays at home.

Until a couple of months ago, one senior Tottenham man’s performances were under the scanner. In fact, many Spurs supporters called for Guglielomo Vicario to be dropped.

However, since then, Vicario has delivered a few Man of the Match performances, which have got most of his detractors in the Tottenham fan base to change their tune.

Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario is one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League

While the Italian appears to have won over the Lilywhites faithful, he is yet to win over the larger footballing media.

Pundits continue to question if Vicario is good enough for a side with Tottenham’s aspirations, but the numbers suggest that the 28-year-old is up there with the best shot-stoppers in the league.

The Premier League website have revealed the save percentage for the goalkeepers across the division, and Vicario comes third on the list with 77.27 per cent.

In fact, only Sunderland’s Robin Roefs (79.17%) and Man City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma (77.78%) have a better save ratio than the Tottenham number one.

Vicario is suffering from the same perception problem that afflicts Cristian Romero

Players often find it difficult to shake off the first impression that pundits have of them, given that these media figures do not tend to watch every game like supporters of these clubs do.

That is why Cristian Romero continues to come under heavy criticism by pundits, with many continuing to refer to the centre-back as rash and reckless, even though there is plenty of evidence to the contrary over the last two years.

One suspects that Vicario will also be unfairly painted as unreliable until he sustains this level of performance for another couple of years.
