Steve McManaman disagrees with Ally McCoist verdict on Atletico Madrid goal vs Liverpool

1 hour ago 1

Atletico Madrid's goal against Liverpool was allowed to stand in the closing minutes of the first half at Anfield, despite Antoine Griezmann appearing to be in Alisson's line of sight when the shot was struck.

The Spanish side was second best throughout the first half, falling behind inside six minutes through goals from Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah.

But despite the home team's dominance, Atletico halved Liverpool's lead on the stroke of half-time when Marcos Llorente poked the ball past Alisson and into the corner of the Reds' goal.

Alisson immediately sprung to his feet, appealing for an offside decision that was not forthcoming, and a VAR check did not lead to the original decision being overturned.

On co-commentary for TNT Sports, Ally McCoist said that he felt the goal should have been disallowed. "My initial reaction was he was offside," McCoist said. "Konate is playing Raspadori onside but it's the shot after... I dont think it should count, Griezmann is in Alisson's line of vision. He is right in front of him."

McManaman said: "Llorente does what he needed to do. I think the goalkeeper can see all the ball when the shot is taken and I think that's why he's been given the benefit of the doubt."
