Steven Gerrard has already given verdict on becoming Liverpool boss

Steven Gerrard already has made it clear what his thoughts were on potentially managing Liverpool.

Liverpool's form in recent weeks has made Arne Slot's seat very hot, with the club struggling in the table, having won just one match in its last five. That said, many have pondered whether a change in leadership is needed, especially as names continue to circulate as potential replacements.

One of those names is Gerrard's, who most recently managed Saudi side Al Ettifaq. However, the 45-year-old made it known in 2019 what he thinks of managing Liverpool, even as the club falters under Slot.

"I was surprised and flattered at the same time," Gerrard said at the time. "But when you read the quote really carefully, like I have, it said 'If I get sacked tomorrow' he thinks Steven Gerrard should be the next Liverpool manager.

"Jurgen Klopp's not getting sacked tomorrow. I don't want him to get sacked tomorrow. He's doing a fantastic job."

The Liverpool legend also noted at the time that he wished for Klopp to remain at Anfield and bring success to the club, which he did during his tenure.

"I'm a Liverpool fan, and I'm sure every Liverpool fan on the planet endorses what I'm saying here, we want him to stay for many, many years and bring as much success to our club as possible, but it [the comment] was very flattering at the same time," he continued.

Arne Slot has been on the hot seat for how Liverpool has performed this season

Gerrard's comments came after Klopp believed that if Liverpool were to replace him, the Anfield legend would have been the perfect candidate. "If Liverpool were to sack me tomorrow, then maybe Kenny (Dalglish) would be the first choice to replace me, but they would probably bring Stevie down from Glasgow," he said in an interview with FourFourTwo.

"If you ask who should follow me, I'd say Stevie. I help him whenever I can."

That said, while Klopp believed that the 45-year-old could be a suitable replacement in the event he was sacked, former Premier League star Emile Heskey stated that for Gerrard to be fully ready to manage at Anfield, he would need more years on the sidelines.

"He needs more experience," he began via BetBrain [ h/t Liverpool Echo ]. "He definitely needs more experience because you're going into the biggest job, or one of the biggest jobs in the world, the scrutiny of everything you do or say or what the players do comes back on you.

"He'll need a lot more experience to jump into that hot seat to be honest.

He added: "He'll get linked to jobs, he'll get asked to come in and interview for jobs, it's up to him what he actually wants to do. Would it be Premier League? I'm not sure but teams abroad would love Steven Gerrard as their manager or first-team coach to take them to greater heights.

"I'm surprised he dropped out for the Rangers job but we don't know the technicalities or ins and outs about what's been said and done. I think he's still got a future within coaching but it's done to what he wants to do."
