Steven Gerrard revealed his surprise soft spot for Newcastle United when admitting the Magpies are his second favourite team in the Premier League.

The Liverpool legend remains unapologetic about his passion for his boyhood club, regularly championing the club and its players. However, the former Reds skipper did reveal for the first time that should Arne Slot's side not win the league title, he'd want the North East side to lift the crown.

Walking inside Newcastle's dressing room on Friday, Gerrard told TNT Sports: "It's quite fitting actually that we're in the Newcastle dressing room, because outside of Liverpool, if I wanted anyone to win the league it would be Newcastle. They're my number two team in the Premier League. I've never ever said that, there you go."

Liverpool and Newcastle have quite the history and it was the Merseyside club that earned victory in their last outing, courtesy of Rio Ngumoha's 100th minute winner back in August.

Alongside the starring role the 17-year-old played in the 3-2 victory at St James' Park, Dominik Szoboszlai came in for huge praise after an impressive performance at right-back for the first time in his Liverpool career.

It's a position the Hungarian sensation has played occasionally this season due to injuries to Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong and Joe Gomez. The 25-year-old was back in his preferred midfield role in the 4-0 win against Galatasaray, scoring his 12th goal of the season in a campaign where he's excelled as the club's go-to man.

After watching Szoboszlai impress yet again in the engine room, Gerrard said following full-time that Slot must keep him in midfield to continue his progression as one of the best in his position across Europe.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Gerrard said: "I like his mentality. He's evolved and he's grown a lot since he's become a Liverpool player. We [Liverpool] obviously signed a big talent. He's in the prime years of his career.

"I think Liverpool are going to see the best of him. I hope he stays around for a long time because I think there's a potential captain in there. The way he's playing and his consistency and his mentality, you can hear it in his voice. He's straight on to the next game, talking about Brighton. I love that about him.

"He's flying at the moment. He's full of confidence. He's got everything going for him. He's just got to maintain it and stay healthy. He's definitely a team player. I still think there's another level to him as well.

"I can see him potentially getting more goals, if he can have a consistent run in that 8/10 position. You can see it tonight; he could have had a hat-trick. He's always in and around the box. His ball striking is phenomenal.

"His timing and his technique and he hits it with so much venom. The balls are getting lighter and lighter. He must be an absolute nightmare for the goalkeeper.

"People are going away now talking about his performance because he's exciting and he's entertaining, but he's in his proper position. Keep him in his proper position. Let him flourish."
