Steven Gerrard said that Liverpool has a "real talent" on its hands in Florian Wirtz, amid the German's recent upturn in form.

Wirtz experienced a slow start to life at Anfield but has found his feet over the last couple of months. He scored and provided an assist during Liverpool's 4-1 victory against Newcastle on Saturday, taking his tally up to six goals and eight assists for the season.

Ahead of Liverpool's meeting with the Magpies, Reds legend Gerrard gave his assessment of Wirtz's first few months at Liverpool. "Everyone knew it was definitely going to come, it was just about when," Gerrard said.

"The good thing about Liverpool fans is they're very patient, especially with young talent.

"What I will give him, is that even when he wasn't firing on all cylinders early on, he still had moments of brilliance, he still had little moments where you thought, 'Hello, that's going to come, once he can find his feet consistently.'

"It also looks like they've built him up in the gym now. He looks like he's carrying on a few more kilos to me, he's used to the duels and the challenges from behind.

"Make no mistake – we've got a real talent on our hands."

Meanwhile, the BBC published an interview with Wirtz this weekend, in which the German international hinted at difficulties he experienced while trying to adapt to playing in the Premier League.

Wirtz rejected the chance to join Bayern Munich in favor of moving to Anfield and has no regrets about his decision.

"I was very excited when I came and wanted to be an instant success - it didn't come like this," Wirtz said.

"I just had to stay strong in my mind and keep believing in myself that at one point it has to click. I was telling myself: 'You did so good in Germany, you can't just forget how to play football here.'

"It was not completely different football. It was not easy always to have the confidence on the pitch, but I think I dealt really well with it and my people around me helped."

Giving his reasons for joining Liverpool, Wirtz added: "I thought, 'This is the right place to get better and a bigger player.' The club is so big, and the team won the Premier League last year.

"I had very good meetings with the manager before I joined, and a few players contacted me. Virgil [van Dijk], Mo [Salah] as well, sent me a message. They were not begging me to come, but just tried to give me a feeling about Liverpool.

"Virgil said he would be happy if I come, and maybe I can help the team to get even better than they were last year.

"These are things you like to hear and helps you to decide in the end. I am still happy that I made this decision, even when the start wasn't that easy."
