Ally McCoist appears to be embracing a 'laugh or cry' approach regarding Rangers' current predicament.
The club's recent bid to tempt Steven Gerrard back to Ibrox collapsed over the weekend, with the Liverpool legend pulling out of contention. The manager who delivered the club's most recent Scottish Premiership triumph doesn't feel the timing is right for a return, echoing his stance from the summer.
With merely five days remaining before the Glasgow giants meet Dundee United in their Premiership comeback, Andrew Cavenagh is eager to witness a fresh face in the technical area.
Danny Rohl is presently at the front of the queue, with numerous other candidates also being considered. The international interval has offered some respite for supporters following recent disappointing displays.
Nevertheless, as McCoist revealed, even a weekend without fixtures provided no assurance of pleasure for the Bears.
Speaking to host Jeff Stelling on talkSPORT, he said: "Do you know something? My mate phoned me on Saturday and he said: 'Rangers aren't even playing and they're still spoiling my Saturday'.
"I think Stevie Gerrard pulled out at about seven o'clock, out of the manager's race for the position. I said I fancied it to be his if he wanted it and he could get some arrangements and things like that, obviously.
"He had one or two things to iron out but sadly, that wasn't the case. And that was it, we're still on the hunt.
"It looks likely to be Danny Rohl but there's one or two other boys. Michael Carrick's come into the frame. The two of us, we're in a bit of a state, aren't we?"
Following his decision not to return to Ibrox, Gerrard has finally broken his silence on social media.
He took to Instagram to congratulate former Rangers colleague Ross Wilson, who has recently been appointed as Newcastle's new sporting director.
In his Instagram story, Gerrard penned: "Congratulations @ross_wilson7. Great club for you, best of luck mate."
With Gerrard out of the picture, it's still uncertain who Rangers will appoint as their next permanent manager. Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has been loosely linked with the Ibrox role, but Rohl seems to be the leading contender at present.
Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna is also rumored to be in the running, although it appears unlikely that he'll be departing Portman Road in the near future.
