Steven Gerrard feels Liverpool can win the Champions League this season, but thinks the priority at this stage of the season must be to improve the club’s league position.

Liverpool currently sits sixth in the Premier League table, which would not secure a place in Europe’s elite competition next season.

But despite the indifferent form domestically, Liverpool has often reserved its best displays for the Champions League stage this term. It won six of eight league-phase matches, including against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan. That helped Arne Slot’s side finish third in the 36-time table, and even Slot has referenced Liverpool’s ability to find greater levels against Europe’s elite.

That has led to a growing belief Liverpool is capable of ending the campaign with a seventh European triumph. Certainly, Gerrard believes his former side can win the famous trophy again.

“I think from a Liverpool point of view, it will be interesting if he can try and consolidate a top four or five place where the pressure's off there, then he can prioritize the Champions League,” the ex-Reds captain told TNT Sports.

“I think a fully fit Liverpool squad can go the distance but I think it'd just be outside the favorites. They'd have to keep the best team available and fit.”

Asked about the need to guarantee a top-five place, Gerrard said: “I would say it's a priority, especially after the spend last year, they’d have to finish in the Champions League places.

“Liverpool have got the players and the pedigree as it goes on to get better and stronger, in my opinion,” he added.

“And then if they start prioritizing it because they've already sorted the league position out for next year, Liverpool can be dangerous in it, I think.”

Liverpool will have to overcome Galatasaray over two legs in the last-16, with the winner then set to lock horns with Chelsea or Paris Saint-Germain.

Alarmingly for Liverpool, Gerrard named PSG, the reigning European champion who eliminated the Reds last season, as the side most likely to win the tournament this season.

“I think Bayern [Munich] and Liverpool could be the ones people don’t think can get there, but they can.

“I would be pushed that way [PSG] as well, if they can get everyone on the pitch.”
