Steven Gerrard urged to take Wrexham job as pressure builds on current manager

2 hours ago 2

Steven Gerrard has been informed there would be "no downside" for him should he become Wrexham's next manager.

The Liverpool legend was suggested earlier this month as a potential replacement if Phil Parkinson were to be dismissed from his position. The current Red Dragons chief was facing scrutiny at that point following Wrexham's collection of merely four points from the team's initial five Championship games after securing promotion from League One in April.

Nevertheless, a victory away to Norwich and a home stalemate with Derby on Saturday have relieved some of the pressure on Parkinson, alongside his team's advancement to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The former Sunderland and Bolton chief has also received support from club director Shaun Harvey, who described a report suggesting discussions had taken place regarding his future as "an absolute disgrace."

Despite these reassurances, former Chelsea star turned football pundit Pat Nevin believes Gerrard would be an ideal candidate should the Wrexham position become vacant, citing a perceived absence of expectation surrounding the role.

The 45-year-old, who has previously managed Rangers and Aston Villa, remains without employment following the conclusion of his 18-month tenure with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq in January.

"I have to say, Wrexham's a temptation for Steven Gerrard," Nevin told the Escapist Magazine.

"With Wrexham, what's the downside of that? The expectations are minimal from most people in football. Maybe not from the owners, let's be fair.

"But he could make that extra special. My eyebrows are raising at that one. I'm thinking, 'Oh yeah, that could be good'. And of course, [being near the] north-west, Wrexham may have a wee understanding with Liverpool Football Club.

"I wouldn't be surprised at that one if that happened. Certainly from Stevie G's point of view, that might be a temptation."

While Nevin seems persuaded there would be no pressure on Gerrard at Wrexham, the club's Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have made their Premier League aspirations abundantly clear.

The Red Dragons invested millions in new signings during the summer transfer window as they geared up to compete in the second tier.

The pressure on Parkinson has eased slightly in recent days, though it could readily intensify once more with his team presently positioned 15th in the Championship table.

Wrexham is preparing for a tough battle on Tuesday, as the team travels to Leicester. The Red Dragons will then welcome Birmingham City to the Racecourse Ground for a Friday showdown.
