Steven Gerrard warned about making sensational comeback with former club in need

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has been linked with a return to his former club Rangers but ex-Reds teammate Glen Johnson has warned that it might not be a good next step.

Russell Martin is under extreme pressure after a dismal start to the season which has seen his side drop to eighth place, 16 points off the early leader, Hearts. And Gerrard would be a popular pick with fans after winning the Scottish Premiership with Rangers in his last stint in the role.

Gerrard moved on to Aston Villa after that but was replaced by Unai Emery after an underwhelming spell. He then moved to Saudi Arabia but was let go as boss of Al Ettifaq by mutual consent.

"He did a great job [at Rangers] before when he was there, but it’s a different group of players there, and a different club he’d be walking into," Johnson told 10bet.

"But it doesn’t always make sense to go back to somewhere you were before, so I don’t know if he’ll be keen to get back to it. Rangers might not be the right place for him anymore.

"I don’t think he’d be tempted to go back, because all his family are down south. It would be a huge upheaval for something that might not be as good as it was last time.

"As for Frank Lampard, I think he’ll prefer fighting for playoffs and promotion, even the title, than slugging it out in Scotland with a side that is struggling right now.

"If Lamps pulls it off with Coventry this season, they will be back in the Premier League, and that’s where everyone wants to be."

Gerrard has also been linked with a move to Wrexham, the Championship side backed by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney. He has been out of work since January of this year.

Al Ettifaq was only five points above the relegation zone at the time and felt that it couldn't wait any longer to make a change.

"I want to express my gratitude to the club, the players, the fans, and everyone involved for the opportunity and the support during my time here, especially the president, Mr. Samer, CEO Mr. Hamad, and the head of the football committee, Mr. Hatim," Gerrard said at the time.

"From the first day, I was warmly welcomed, and I have enjoyed the chance to work in a new country with a different culture. Overall, I have learned a lot, and it's been a positive experience personally and for my family as well. But football is unpredictable, and sometimes things don't go the way we want."

Liverpool.com says: Gerrard's next move will be a very interesting one. It was always going to be after his move to Saudi Arabia, which cannot really be viewed as a wise one for a variety of reasons.
