Steven Gerrard has described managing Liverpool as a "dream" – and he's even open to becoming the Merseyside club's assistant head coach.

The Liverpool icon is willing to assist the Reds in whatever capacity possible. Gerrard has been out of work since departing Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ettifaq in January 2025. His managerial experience includes spells at Aston Villa and Rangers, having begun his coaching journey with Liverpool's academy teams.

When questioned about potentially stepping away from management altogether, he told The Overlap: "I'm okay with that, I enjoy covering some of the games. I enjoy having quite a bit of free time, probably the best part I've had from a family point of view in ever really, in terms of being there, being present.

"Lio [Gerrard's youngest son] is eight now. During his career, I've been in Scotland, in Birmingham, so yeah, really enjoying the family side of it and having a load of free time, but also I'm conscious that I want to stay busy enough."

Having dedicated the bulk of his playing days to Liverpool, Gerrard has clarified his position on rejoining the club in a coaching capacity. He reiterated an offer made to manager Arne Slot last week.

He added: "I've got a brilliant connection with the club, I always have. Probably a stronger connection since I left, they've always been unbelievable.

"Any help or area I could help the club in, obviously, I'd try and do it if I could. But I suppose what you want to know is, do I want to manage Liverpool at some point in my life?

"Of course, that would be a dream, but I think, would I be ready for it right now, to take it over a long period of time, probably not.

"But is there a possibility in the future to be alongside someone, them elite managers that you talk about."

When questioned about whether he would serve as an assistant at Liverpool, he said: "It depends who it is, how the conversation goes, and does he need me? What does he think I can offer?"

Gerrard was then asked whether not being in charge would frustrate him. He answered: "You'd have to understand it before you sign up to it, what the role is, and it's to support the manager, it's to be that assistant.

"I would do it for Liverpool Football Club if I was asked and they felt that I was the right man to do it, I'd be up for it, of course."

Gerrard made his return to Liverpool this weekend, taking part in a Liverpool Legends charity match against Borussia Dortmund at Anfield, where he played under Sir Kenny Dalglish and Jurgen Klopp.

The match finished 2-2 with Thiago Alcantara and Jay Spearing finding the net for Liverpool.
