Liverpool is hoping to bring in Lutsharel Geertruida on loan before Monday's transfer deadline, with injuries at the back making a deal for the Dutchman add up.

Geertruida is currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig. For him to move to Liverpool, the 25-year-old loan in the North East would need to come to an end, and the German side would have to come to an agreement with the Reds.

The Black Cats might need to sign a replacement for Geertruida before letting him go, though it has been claimed that Sunderland won't stand in his way given the size of the opportunity. He's played 17 games for Regis Le Bris this season so far.

Geertruida was supposedly speaking with his Sunderland teammates about a potential move to Liverpool yesterday, and they are not best pleased about the prospect of losing him.

If Geertruida does end up at Liverpool, he will link back up with Arne Slot, who was his coach at Feyenoord. The Liverpool boss is very aware of his versatility and he got the best out of the player in the Netherlands.

"Arne managed to get the best out of me," Geertruida said in 2024. "He was never afraid to give me some harsh truths and was always correct in what he said about me.

"I believe he was a game-changer for Feyenoord as soon as he arrived in Rotterdam. We always looked to play a dominant style of football, no matter the opponent.

"That led to us winning both the league title and the cup — as well as also getting us to a Conference League final. That shows he did a really great job.

"He is an intelligent coach who knows how he wants to go about things. Off the field, he is also very open and is always prepared to listen to what you have to say, and is easy to have a conversation with."

"I think there's always lots of talks about Liverpool and lots of talks about the Liverpool players," Slot said earlier this week. "There was a lot of noise around the club the last week, maybe I should say weeks.

"I think our fans showed today what noise really means, that's being loud because they were so helpful today. So that is what what noise here is in Liverpool.

"I think we are trying to strengthen the squad and not trying to weaken it. Yeah, 48 hours or something, I don't know how long to go. So let's see where the window ends up."

Liverpool.com says: Geertruida makes loads of sense, though a deal isn't done yet. He is versatile and can play in pretty much all the positions where Liverpool is currently light on numbers.
