Manchester City will be looking to avoid a surprise elimination from the EFL Cup when they face Championship side Swansea City in the fourth round on Wednesday night. Pep Guardiola’s team will be eager to respond after their recent 1-0 Premier League defeat to Aston Villa, while Swansea will be aiming for consecutive victories, having defeated Norwich City 2-1 in their last Championship outing.
Swansea ended a near month-long winless streak on Saturday with their triumph over Norwich, thanks to a brace from Zan Vipotnik that secured three valuable points and lifted them to 13th in the Championship standings. Under Alan Sheehan, the Swans are now just three points away from the playoff spots and have impressed in the EFL Cup this season, having already overcome Crawley Town, Plymouth Argyle, and Nottingham Forest to reach this stage.
The Welsh club, who memorably lifted the League Cup in 2013 with a 5-0 victory over Bradford City, will be hoping to claim another Premier League scalp and book their place in the quarter-finals. However, Swansea have lost their last seven meetings with Manchester City in all competitions, including a 2-1 defeat in the third round of the EFL Cup back in September 2016.
Manchester City, meanwhile, come into this fixture following a narrow loss to Villa, with Matty Cash scoring the decisive goal in the 19th minute. Guardiola’s men currently sit fifth in the Premier League, with 16 points from nine matches, trailing leaders Arsenal by six points. In Europe, City have won two of their three Champions League games this season, and in the EFL Cup, they advanced to this round by defeating Huddersfield Town 2-0.
The Citizens have lifted the League Cup eight times, most recently in 2021, and are once again among the favourites to win the competition. City have an impressive record against Swansea, winning 26 of their 37 previous encounters and remaining unbeaten against the Swans since a 1-0 Premier League loss in March 2012.
